Letter to the Editor, 2023
Dear Editor,
This weekend we celebrated Mother’s Day. As I held my one-year-old and rocked her to sleep, all I could think of was the one gift I wanted that I hadn’t yet received. I want to send my child to school without fearing for her life. I want to go to a public space, work, or church, without worrying about gun violence. I want a safer future for my daughter.
Unfortunately, this is not our reality. So, I am writing to express my deep concern about the gun violence epidemic in our country. I know that I am not alone in my fear. Millions of parents nationwide feel the same way, and the majority of Americans support common-sense gun control laws. According to recent data:
• 92% of Americans support requiring background checks for all gun sales, including private and gun show sales.
• 60% of Americans support banning assault weapons designed to kill as many people as possible in a short time.
• 52% of Americans support banning high-capacity magazines, which allow shooters to fire more bullets without reloading, which makes mass shootings deadlier.
These laws would make it more difficult for dangerous people to get guns, and they would help to keep our children safe.
I urge you to continue to use your platform to help raise awareness about this issue and to call on our elected officials to enact common-sense gun control laws. We need to act now to protect our children and our future. It’s the best gift we could give every mother in this country.
Sincerely,
Sarah Poetzschke
